Brackish water Characterization

Brackish water is water that has more salt than freshwater, but not as much as seawater. It may result from mixing of seawater with fresh water, as in estuaries, or it may occur in brackish fossil aquifers. The word comes from the Middle Dutch root "brak". Certain human activities can produce brackish water, in particular civil engineering projects such as dikes and the flooding of coastal marshland to produce brackish water pools for freshwater prawn farming. Brackish water is also the primary waste product of the salinity gradient power process. Because brackish water is hostile to the growth of most terrestrial plant species, without appropriate management it is damaging to the environment (see article on shrimp farms).

Technically, brackish water contains between 0.5 and 30 grams of salt per litre—more often expressed as 0.5 to 30 parts per thousand (‰), which is a specific gravity of between 1.005 and 1.010. Thus, brackish covers a range of salinity regimes and is not considered a precisely defined condition. It is characteristic of many brackish surface waters that their salinity can vary considerably over space or time.

 

Brackish water treatment Requirement

The correct way to operate brackish water system is to maintain the water production flow rate, recovery rate, total concentrated water discharge and operating pressure in line with the design range. Any change in membrane flux due to temperature or pollution needs to be compensated by adjusting the inlet water pressure. However, the specified maximum inlet pressure should not be exceeded and the membrane should not be allowed to contain too much dirt.

 

If the influent water quality analysis report changes and the fouling tendency increases, the system's concentrated water discharge should be increased, the system recovery rate should be reduced, or other measures should be taken to comply with the new system conditions.

 

The most common situation is that the water production of the water treatment system must be adjusted as needed. The design usually determines the scale of the system according to the peak of water consumption. Therefore, it is not possible to take more than the designed water production. The adjustment of system water production can only mean reducing the system output. When the production of water is not required, the easiest way is to stop the operation of the system. However, the frequent start and stop of the system will affect the performance and life of the membrane. In order to obtain a relatively smooth operation, the water storage buffer tank can be designed; Pressure is another way to reduce the amount of water produced by the system. At this time, the high-speed pump with adjustable speed can also save energy. When reducing the water production, if you want to keep the original recovery rate of the system, ensure that the recovery rate of a single original will not exceed their limit. Sometimes, during the operation of low-yield water flow, the system desalination rate avoids the design of production flow rate. Low, and must also be careful to ensure that the system's concentrated water flow exceeds the minimum concentrated water flow during low flow operation.
